James 5: 12 "But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation." ESV
In reading about this I have found that if you swore by anything other than the name of the Lord you could just walk away but to swear by the name of the Lord it was binding. So what James is saying is that your yes should be binding and your no should be binding as well, just on your own integrity. Your honesty should shine as a testimony of your walk with the Lord. Our word alone should be enough and in doing so your witness will also be strong.
