1 Timothy 5:5-6 "She who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day, but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives."ESV

If your wondering how you can serve our Lord, serving widows and orphans is right up there. Why would God take such notice, because they are alone in this world. Jesus told His disciples that He would not leave them as orphans but that He would always be with them. That's how God is with widows and orphans today. Supplying their needs as they go through this life. Families may abandon but God never will, they may be neglected by this world but God will never neglect them. If you and I want to hear well done, we need to not neglect our widows and orphans around us.

1 Timothy 6:17 "As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy."ESV

Okay two things right off the bat. I know that having provision in our finances are important for everyone. Second, but if your like me your thinking this can't apply to me because I am so far from being rich even if I had one of those space telescopes I couldn't see it.

However, what are your hopes focussed on. Your retirement, 401k, inheritance, savings, investments or maybe social security. The whole point in Paul's teaching here is that nothing on this earth is to where it can't fail you. The only person who will never fail you is God. You've heard the saying about their hopes being dashed, well with Jesus that can't happen, if you hopes are in Him instead of the world. Oh they may seem challenged at times but they will not fail because Jesus will never fail you.

Titus 1:1-3 "Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;"ESV

"In hope of eternal life, which God who never lies, promised before the ages began." Out of God's foreknowledge He wrote every name in the Lambs Book of Life before the foundation of the earth was laid. God further said only those whose name is fond written in that book would enter Heaven with Him. Thus Paul is saying that our hope of eternal life with Jesus is secure because God said all who would believe in Jesus would have eternal life. Because God can't lie thus it's all not just done but it is an absolute.

It's like Paul saying let there be no doubt. So stop listening to anything that says otherwise because God is sovereign.

Titus 2:11-14 "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works."ESV

Hurry up and wait, wait is what broke the wagon, a dollar waiting on a dime and my favorite is, I don't work at a restaurant because I'm not a good waiter. Waiting is probly not our strong suit, except there is that; Isaiah 40:30-31 "Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."ESV

Waiting on earthly things may be hard but as a child of God, waiting on Him is everything.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 "Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word."ESV

"Comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word"  The comfort and assurance in your heart comes from God's word because it is impossible for Him to lie. Then the evidence of your salvation is seen in your good works. Good only because it is the Holy Spirit that enables you to do them. It is He that makes your works good.

Jesus said if I go I will send a comforter and apart from me you can do nothing. Nobody but Jesus

1 Timothy 1:1 "Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,"ESV

When Sam Cox and I go fishing I'm always hoping we'll catch multiple fish and a good old big one to go with them. But often I'm lucky if I get a bite. The word hope I use is more of a I wish we could. But not so with the hope Paul is talking about because of who it is that is the author of that hope.

The world disappoints us in our hopes and so do even our closest friends at times. But Jesus is not a wish giver, that's a jeanie in the bottle by the way, no Jesus is our expectation and anticipation provider. Bonus here, Jesus will NEVER fail you.

1 Timothy 4:10 "For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe."ESV

"We have hope on a living God" How do I see God? That's an interesting question and even Jesus more or less asked this question of the disciples as well, when He said "Who do you say I am". Is God alive to us or maybe He's a spirit, which He is by the way the Holy Spirit. I'm not sure we see God or Jesus and especially the Holy Spirit as being alive to us. I think that's why the children of Israel had a golden calf built. Though it wasn't alive they could touch and see physically but here's the other part. They could decide what worship was and how they needed to act. They could make their calf god to be what ever THEY wanted instead of God being not only alive but sovereign. Let me ask, are we trying to make god be what we want, or are we bowing before God seeking what He desires of us? Yea, I left the first g small because that god is not God.
